The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel database contains the complete text of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel newspaper. The "Journal Sentinel" is the largest newspaper in Wisconsin, with daily circulation of over 286,000 and Sunday at 466,000. The main news section delivers detailed coverage from around the city, state, nation, and world. Each Sunday, news, business, and sports coverage is expanded with several feature sections. Industry coverage includes insurance, manufacturing, agriculture, and finance.   /LP,/TX  Acquisition-minded trucking giant Schneider National Inc. struck another 
    deal Thursday  the planned purchase of struggling Landstar Poole Inc. for 
    $41 million in cash. 
     
        The purchase of the Alabama-based firm would bring Schneider 650 
    tractors, 1,300 trailers, some accounts receivable and a $100 million 
    company that hauls paper, chemical goods and other freight across the 
    eastern United States. 
     
  /TX       More significantly, the deal would give Schneider access to Landstar's 
    600 employee drivers and 250 owner-operators. 
     
        "That's the most important asset in this business," said Thom Albrecht, 
    who tracks the trucking industry for ABN AMRO Inc., Chicago. "He who has 
    the most drivers wins." 
     
        With a strong-running U.S. economy boosting demand for trucking,  firms 
    nationwide have struggled for several years with a shortage of drivers. 
    Many companies, including Schneider, have boosted pay and taken other steps 
    to attract and retain drivers. 
     
        Meanwhile, Schneider, which made no acquisitions for years, now has 
    bought three trucking companies in the last seven months. 
     
        Combined, the purchases would give Schneider another 2,800 tractors, 
    6,000 trailers and 3,500 employees, most of them drivers. That would boost 
    the company's work force by a fifth, to more than 20,000. 
     
        Schneider, a privately held firm based in Green Bay, is North America's 
    biggest full-truckload freight hauler. Its sales last year totaled $2.5 
    billion. 
        Landstar Poole lost $700,000 last year and, according to Albrecht, has 
    lost money consistently since 1994. 
     
        But the deal, given the price and the amount of revenue that can be 
    generated with the equipment Schneider is buying, is a good one for 
    Schneider, he said. 
     
        Albrecht said Schneider needn't necessarily be concerned with making 
    Landstar Poole's existing book of business work. Rather, he said, Schneider 
    might try to capture Landstar Poole's more profitable accounts, pick up as 
    many drivers as possible, and use the new drivers and equipment on existing 
    Schneider business. 
     
        Any decently run truckload carrier currently has more demand than it 
    can fill, and Schneider is "very well-run," Albrecht said.
