    TEXT:
/LP, /TX  A comet that is among the largest astronomers have ever seen is about to
peak in brightness and size and is visible to the naked eye.

The Hale -Bopp  comet, named for the two amateur astronomers who
discovered it in July 1995, is an important celestial find that has the
scientific community tracking its every movement.

/TX  It's the comet of the century," said Mickey Prangley, meteorologist at
WPDE-TV (Channel 15) in Myrtle Beach. "It's the most widely studied comet
ever and will yield more data than any other comet. It's brighter than
    Jupiter."

Terry Richardson, professor of physics and astronomy at the College of
Charleston, said this comet is significant for its size, brightness and the
amount of time it will be able to be viewed from Earth.

"It's unusual for it to have been so far from the sun," he said. "It was
past Jupiter when it was discovered. The nuclei, or head, is among the
largest ever seen, and it's the brightest one anyone will get to see in
    their lifetime.

"There are more comets coming, but but we might not see them for
decades. So many were disappointed by Halley, but this one was brighter
than Halley when they were at the same distance."
