    Praktiker ranks as Germany's second largest DIY retailer behind OBI.  It 
    has  focused heavily on communicating its low price credentials in recent 
    years.  This has helped grow sales, but has severely hit profitability, 
    with the business in the red in both 2002 and 2003.  While price remains 
    the key footfall driver, Praktiker also aims to differentiate itself 
    through the breadth of its range.  It has also been targeting trade sales, 
    with a key part of this being the Praktiker Key Account Card, offering a 
    tiered discount scheme for high spenders that can provide savings of up to 
    10%. 
     
    Praktiker's operations are concentrated on its domestic German market, 
    where it makes 76.2% of its turnover.  Much of its expansion has focused on 
    central & eastern Europe, with strong operations in Poland and Hungary, 
    while it is the only leading international DIY operator to have a 
    significant presence in Greece.

    * After a difficult 2002 and 2003, 2004 was a year of progress for 
    Praktiker.  In its domestic market like-for-like sales were strong, up 4.3% 
    on a like-for-like basis (3.9% overall) in the first nine months of the 
    year.  And the trend has been improving, with l-f-l growth at 9.4% in 
    Germany in Q3.  International sales growth was also strong, with total 
    sales up by just under 12%.  This was largely driven by new store openings, 
    however, with like-for-like sales more modest at around 3%.  At least as 
    significant was the rise in profitability, with earnings before interest, 
    tax, and amortisation (EBITA) at  59.3m - a sign of significant progress.
