Indonesia has seven petroleum refineries in operation, with a total
installed capacity of 992,745 b/d. Pertamina owns two of the seven
refineries it operates, and the Ministry of Finance owns the remaining
five. Kilang Minyak Intan Nusantara--a joint venture comprising Al-Banader
International Group of Saudi Arabia (40%), China National Electrical
Equipment Corporation (40%) and Intanjaya Agromegah Abadi (20%)--is
investing a total of US$6bn to build two Indonesian oil refineries, one in
Pare-Pare, South Sulawesi and the other in Batam Island, Riau. Both
projects are scheduled to commence operating in 2005, with a processing
capacity of around 300,000 b/d. The refineries will be export-oriented,
taking Saudi crude and refining it for sale primarily to the Chinese
market. Pertamina and the state-owned National Iranian Oil Co also plan to
construct another petroleum refinery, the US$1bn 50,000-b/d Tuban refinery
in east Java. Pertamina is also a major operator in the petroleum retailing
sector, owning 400 of Indonesia's approximately 2,000 petrol stations.
