ALTHOUGH parts of England and Wales are suffering the most widespread flooding
since 1947, householders were asked yesterday to conserve water. The irony may
have been lost on those unable to see dry land from their kitchen windows, but
at least two companies were asking their customers yesterday to use water
"wisely". Up to three million people in parts of the Home Counties and another
20,000 in Kent were urged to take showers rather than baths, not leave taps
running unnecessarily and use washing machines and dish washers only with a
full load. The problems have been prompted by gales and heavy rainfall, which
cut off electricity to several key pumping stations and affected water quality,
forcing companies to shut off supplies from some underground sources. In Kent,
Folkestone and Dover Water Services asked thousands of customers to save water.
The company also had to ask a further 10,000 households in the Dover area not
to drink water from their taps because of concern over its quality.  Although it
has enough water for the immediate future, customers have been asked to
conserve water for at least three days as more stormy weather threatens the
region. Customers have been told to boil water before drinking it or using it
for cooking. Three Valleys Water has also asked its three million customers in
parts of Essex, Surrey, Hertfordshire, north-west London, Buckinghamshire and
Bedfordshire not to waste water. Almost 30 pumping stations in the region have
been affected by power failures or flooding.
