File Description [top]

The Latin American News database is derived from general circulation newspapers of the Latin America region. Currently it includes fulltext stories from El Norte and Reforma, two Spanish-language daily newspapers from Mexico. Each of the papers brings coverage of local issues, business, and politics, combined with the unique features of the paper.

El Norte, based in Monterrey, Mexico is the largest general circulation newspaper in Mexico. El Norte is recognized for its independent coverage of politics, business, and national news. Reforma is a Spanish-language daily newspaper published in Mexico City. Reforma reports on local, national, and international issues.

  /TX   Busca France Telecom ayudar a la empresa para que enfrente a la 
     competencia en 1997 
          Telmex trabaja ya en cambios y en la consolidacion de 
     asociaciones estrategicas con firmas internacionales que le 
     ayudaran a enfrentar la apertura telefonica que se hara efectiva 
     a partir de 1997, dijo el Director de France Telecom en Mexico, 
     Francois Schoeller. 
          En una entrevista, agrego que la recientes alianzas de 
     Telmex con Cablevision, Red Uno y Sprint asi como el desarrollo 
     de otros proyectos, forman parte de la preparacion de la compania 
     para enfrentar la competencia. 
          El directivo senalo que la participacion de France Telecom 
     que cuenta con un cinco por ciento de la empresa, de manera similar 
     a Southwestern Bell, busca convertir a Telmex en una empresa capaz 
     de enfrentar la competencia. 
          "La competencia debe ser equitativa y con control de calidad 
     para que no ocurra la experiencia de Chile donde hubo una 
     competicion salvaje que provoco que incluso hubiera servicios de 
     mala calidad", comento. 
          Si las reglas son claras creo que podemos crecer mas que 
     perder, si tenemos tres grandes competidoras en Mexico la gente 
     puede elegir bien, el riesgo es si son muchas pequenas que no es 
     tan razonable, expreso. 
           Telmex ha hecho muchas inversiones para establecer 14 mil 
     kilometros de fibra optica, concluir la construccion del cable 
     submarino Columbus II, mejorar el servicio y ofrecerlo a todos 
     los mercados con obligaciones sociales, entonces cuando inicie la 
     competencia las operadoras no solo deben atender a los clientes 
     ricos, dijo. 
          El mercado, continuo, no es un pastel que se vaya a repartir 
     entre las competidoras asi como esta, sino que es un pastel que va 
     a crecer y Telmex esta en una buena posicion. 
          Dijo que France Telecom trabaja con Telmex en sus relaciones 
     internacionales y apoya la conmutacion de su planta externa, la 
     capacitacion en el metodo de gestion, su acuerdo con Sprint, todo 
     encaminado a la mejor organizacion y el combate a la burocracia. 
          "Hace 20 anos France Telecom era una empresa muy mala y ahora 
     es una de las mejores del Mundo, esa experiencia nos respalda para 
     ayudar a Telmex", senalo. 
          Expuso que encuestas de opinion les demostraron que los tres 
     principales quejas de los usuarios son la mala atencion, la 
     corrupcion y las tarifas en Telmex. 
          El cambio de la imagen actual de Telmex no se puede lograr 
     solo con publicidad, para cambiar la imagen tenemos que hacerlo 
     con la empresa, apunto.
