| TEXT: | |
| /LP, /TX | Share prices traded in narrow limits throughout the day as |
| arbitrageurs continued to unwind their positions ahead of | |
| the expiry of the September series on the futures market | |
| later this week. | |
| Dealers said the tail wagged the dog as professional investors | |
| scrambled to cover short positions. Recent takeover speculation | |
| and economic revival have seen a big premium established in the | |
| FT-SE 100 index September series. At the start of business | |
| yesterday, 4,000 open contracts had still to be sorted out. | |
| As a result, most institutional investors remained on the | |
| sidelines, with the FT-SE 100 index see-sawing in a 12-point | |
| band before closing 2.9 lower at 2,576.6. The FT index of | |
| 30 shares lost 7.1 at 2,009.4 with 452m shares traded. | |
| /TX | Government securities were left nursing falls of #1/8 at the |
| longer end ahead of today's #1.5bn auction. | |
| Asda, the troubled supermarket chain, continued to lose | |
| ground, with the price sliding 4.5p to 59.5p as dealers | |
| braced themselves for details of a #350m rights issue, | |
| expected today. The shares fell 30% last week after the | |
| after the company issued a grim profits warning and cut | |
| the dividend. There is speculation that the group is | |
| considering raising #350m through a two-for-three rights | |
| issue at 45p. Dealers do not rule out a bid. | |
| Sears, the Freemans mail order and Saxone to Selfridges | |
| group, touched 99p before closing 2p higher at 95p in | |
| active trade that saw more than 5m shares change hands | |
| as bid speculation intensified. Sears, an old takeover | |
| favourite, is now seen as a possible target for | |
| Kingfisher, the Woolworth, Comet and B and Q retailer, | |
| down 7p at 543.5p. Speculators have been saying for some time | |
| that Kingfisher will take advantage of its strong share price | |
| to make an acquisition. | |
| . | |
| . | |
| . | |
| P and P, the computer systems group, jumped 10p to 119p. | |
| The price has risen 20% so far this week, helped by bullish | |
| reviews from Hoare Govett and UBS Phillips and Drew. Both | |
| recommend P and P as a recovery stock. Hoare Govett | |
| forecasts pre-tax profits of #8m for the current | |
| year compared with #13.1m last time. |
