| /ME | NOTES: THE NATION; 'These are the days you live for in space science and |
| space exploration,' NASA scientists say as the first of 10 missions is | |
| launched. | |
| TEXT: | |
| /LP, /TX | NASA's unmanned Mars Global Surveyor sped into space Thursday, the first |
| in a series of missions that renews U.S. exploration of the Red Planet. | |
| ``These are the days you live for in space science and space | |
| exploration,'' says Wesley Huntress, NASA space science chief. ``It's an | |
| exciting and very emotional experience.'' | |
| /TX | Delayed a day by bad weather over Florida, the $150 million Global |
| Surveyor lifted off flawlessly atop a $55 million Delta II rocket at noon | |
| to begin a 10-month trip to Mars. | |
| Shortly after liftoff, it suffered a minor glitch when a solar panel did | |
| not swing open fully. Space agency officials expect it to do so once a | |
| hinge warms. | |
| The launch marks the beginning of a new U.S. approach: Exploring the | |
| planet with smaller, cheaper spacecraft designed to outperform their more | |
| complex predecessors that were prone to fail. | |
| (. . .) | |
| Thermal emission spectrometer: Analyzes heat from surface, composition of | |
| minerals in sand dunes and distribution of rocks and dust. | |
| The cruise to Mars | |
| It takes about 10 months to reach Mars on a trajectory that sends the probe | |
| more than halfway around the sun. Average cruise speed: 66,000 mph. | |
| Nearing Mars in September, the spacecraft begins aerobraking to slow its | |
| speed enough to be captured by Martian gravity. Aerobraking, dipping the | |
| spacecraft into the Martian atmosphere to let friction slow it down, takes | |
| about four months. | |
| Two months after Surveyor reaches a circular orbit, the mapping mission | |
| starts, lasting until January 2000. | |
| Aerobraking begins Sept. 12, 1997, 34,008 miles from Mars | |
| Mapping begins March 16, 1998, 234 miles above Mars' surface | |
