| /LP,/TX | TEXT: Not only is Internet use less than many believed- |
| or smaller than many would have us believe - Web users | |
| tend not to surf beyond homepages of the vast majority | |
| of sites in cyberspace. Such were the findings presented | |
| by Thomas Miller, v.p. of emerging technologies group, | |
| Find/SVP, during the Interactive Services Association's | |
| second annual strategic business meeting in Miami earlier | |
| this week. | |
| /TX | Citing preliminary findings from Find/SVP's just-compiled |
| "American Internet User Survey," Miller further | |
| undermined the over-optimistic and increasingly | |
| discredited findings of the much-publicized Nielsen | |
| study released late last year. Miller said Find/SVP | |
| measured approximately 8.4 million adult American | |
| Internet users and 9.5 million users overall, of | |
| which approximately 7.5 million are Web surfers. Find/SVP, | |
| he admitted, was surprised by the less-than-stratospheric | |
| figures, which are far lower than the endless amounts of | |
| Internet hype have suggested. "We expected double | |
| these figures," said Miller, who also wondered aloud | |
| whether the Internet was drawing new groups of users | |
| or merely attracting more people already online with one | |
| of the major commercial services. | |
| Also of interest was the survey's finding that 46 percent | |
| of Internet users access the Net via commercial online | |
| services. | |
| America Online Inc. led the pack with its subscribers | |
| accounting for 30 percent of Internet users, followed | |
| followed by 9 percent for Prodigy Services Co., 4 | |
| percent for CompuServe Inc. and 2 percent for | |
| The Microsoft Network. Miller said Find/SVP's research | |
| also suggested a more selective pattern of Web-site | |
| surfing than widely assumed. Fully two-thirds of | |
| Internet users are over 30 and apparently spend more | |
| time in fewer sites. Further, Miller relayed the | |
| dismaying finding that 75 percent of all Web users | |
| have viewed less than 100 sites in depth, i.e., | |
| gone beyond the home page. And, he said, the average | |
| number of total sites visited in-depth by this | |
| majority was 25. | |
| If you are planning on reaching millions of | |
| consumers through the Net, you better rethink," he | |
| warned advertisers with visions of Web-based riches. | |
| Another interesting tidbit turned up by the Find/SVP | |
| survey revealed that contrary to popular wisdom, | |
| Internet use appears to be increasing at the expense | |
| of telephone, rather than television time. | |
| "People use the Internet to connect with others," Miller | |
| said, noting that e-mail is replacing long-distance | |
| calling, as a cheaper way to reach out and touch | |
| - or flame - someone. To that end, he argued, the | |
| Internet is a relationship-based medium, not, as many | |
| contend, a mass medium. | |
| "Today, the Internet is more like an 800 number, not TV." | |
