     TEXT:
/LP, /TX   LONDON  -  Fields  of  rotting  fruit and vegetables in a country
desperate  for  food  and  foreign  currency made little sense to
Eastman Kodak Co. when the U.S. firm was considering setting up a
chain of fast film processing shops in Poland.

/TX        Selling  Kodak film in Poland for payments made in the shaky
local currency made little sense either.

Recognizing  that  one  of  Poland's major handicaps was the
absence  of  any  industrial  food  refrigeration  processes, the
Rochester,  N.Y.-based  photographic  equipment  group  set about
devising  a countertrade transaction that could prove a model for
other companies eager to trade with Eastern Europe.

Through  a  joint  venture  with a Polish organization and a
small   Swiss-based   partner,   Eastman   Kodak   arranged   for
refrigeration  equipment  to  be  shipped  to  Poland.  Food that
otherwise  would have gone to waste or been sold only locally now
     can be frozen and exported.

The  resulting  foreign exchange will be used to pay Eastman
Kodak  in  dollars rather than zloty. The first exports of frozen
food already have been shipped to the United States.

"Western   companies   must   think  laterally  rather  than
vertically  when  doing business with Eastern Europe and must not
just  stick  to  their own line of business," said Anthony Gould,
director for central and Eastern Europe at Kodak Ltd. in Britain.
Mr. Gould was actively involved in the negotiations.

An arrangement like this not only solves the crucial problem
of   obtaining  payment  in  hard  currency,  but  also  makes  a
contribution to industrial modernization, he believes.

Many  experts agree that processed food could become a major
export  earner  for  countries like Poland and Hungary, but right
now  Polish  produce  is  either  fresh,  tinned  or  pickled and
generally of a quality that would not be acceptable in the West.
