     TEXT:
/LP,TX       Metallurgical engineer Frank Stephens Jr. has been called
a lot of things.  "Brilliant" and "innovative" come up in
conversation with his colleagues.  But you cannot forget
     "patient."
For more than 20 years, Stephens has worked on a process
to convert iron ore into an iron-carbide feedstock for
     steelmaking furnaces.
/TX       Soon,  the  steelmaker  Nucor  Corp.  is expected to
announce where it will build an iron-carbide production plant
based on technology licensed by Stephens and his Lakewood
     company, Iron Carbide Holdings Ltd.
North Star Steel, the Minneapolis-based subsidiary of
Cargill Inc., also has licensed Stephens' technology for
construction of an iron carbide plant.
If  iron carbide can be produced economically and
efficiently on a commercial scale, it could revolutionize
     steelmaking in the 21st century.
If Stephens' vision proves accurate, plants based on his
technology will produce steel at a lower cost per ton than
     steel produced today.
Nucor,  which  operates  steel minimills, turned to
Stephens' technology in its search for new sources of virgin
iron for its furnaces.  Typically, minimills melt steel scrap
to make new steel in their electric arc furnaces, but a
looming  shortage of top-quality scrap--metal not contaminated
by  things  such as copper, nickel, chromium or tin--prompted
interest by Nucor and other steelmakers in alternate
     feedstocks such as iron carbide.
"Frank  Stephens  is  a remarkable individual," said
Colorado School of Mines metallurgy professor John Hager.
"He invented this technology and he stuck with it through
     tough times."
