Deciding  to  work  part-time  causes anxiety for many workers. They wonder
    what  their family will have to give up to compensate for their salary cut;
they worry about how to convince their boss that the arrangement won't hurt
the  company.  On top of that, many workers face the nagging fear that they
are  doing irreparable damage to their careers by reducing their commitment
    to the corporate world.

A recent study by Catalyst, a New York-based non-profit group that works
to advance women in business, may offer some reassurance to workers on this
last  point.  In  1989, Catalyst began following the careers of workers who
had switched to part-time positions or other flexible work arrangements.

Now  the  group  has  released  a follow-up survey of 24 women from the
original  group.  Most  of  the  women  said  they  were satisfied with the
trade-offs  they  made to better balance work with the rest of their lives.
Half  of them had returned to full-time work; most of the rest continued to
work  part-time.About  half  said  they had been promoted during the period
    when they worked part-time.

''This  small  group of women has shown that they can have children, cut
back  on  career efforts for a period of time and still create careers that
they  find  rewarding  and that add value to their companies,'' said Marcia
Brumit  Kropf,  vice  president  of  research  and  information services at
    Catalyst.
