  /LP,/TX  FROM ECONOMIST INTELLIGENCE UNIT

From ingredients to restaurants, Italian food has become a staple for the
    UK consumer

From March 16th-19th a small corner of London was transformed as the Grand
Hall Olympia hosted "La Dolce Vita", a festival dedicated to promoting all
things Italian. For three days the general public came from far and wide
for a slice of Italian style, property, wine and, most importantly, food.

Although it is only in its second year, "La Dolce Vita" seems to have
become a popular attraction, reflecting a growing British fascination with
Italian cuisine. While the festival does attracts its fair share of Italian
expatriates and real estate entrepreneurs, attendance is generally made up
of UK consumers with a natural interest in Italian food.

/TX  The success of La Dolce Vita stems from consumers' growing awareness of
Italian cuisine and products, which has built up over the past two decades.
London has recently hosted other events devoted to Italian cuisine such as
the smaller "Gusto" festival. Italian food also played a prominent role in
the national "Good Food Show" in November 2005.

    Celebrity endorsement

There are a number of factors driving a growing interest in Italian food
among British consumers. At a round table to discuss the growing role of
Italian cuisine, restaurateur Giorgio Locatelli cited business factors as
playing a key part, claiming: "The economy has helped Italian restaurants
in the UK, with cheap flights and more relaxed import/export laws ... ...
    creating more business opportunities."

                   (.  .  .) _
But even as the popularity of Italian food grows tastes are continuing to
evolve. Simple and healthy cooking from other Mediterranean cultures such
as Greece and North Africa are gaining prominence and many foods previously
thought to be specialist will one day be considered as British as roast
    beef, balti and Bolognese.
