    WORD COUNT: 274
/LP,/TX  Owing to a slowdown in imports and an acceleration in export growth towards
end-2005, our estimate for the current-account deficit in 2005 has been
revised downwards to only 0.3% of GDP. Exports will continue to grow in
2006-07, but the pace of growth will be slower than that recorded in 2005,
when export revenue expanded by 21.6% year on year, largely because of the
sharp increase in the value of crude oil exports. Despite a sluggish
performance for most of 2005, garment exports recorded growth of nearly 10%
year on year in the year as a whole, a respectable result given the
increasingly competitive trading environment. Assuming that Vietnam joins
the WTO in 2006, garment exports should remain buoyant. WTO entry should
also ensure that exports of footwear, seafood, computers and computer
parts, and furniture all continue to grow rapidly. Despite this expansion
in export revenue, the merchandise trade deficit is forecast to widen in
2006-07 as import growth picks up.

/TX  The deficits on the services and income accounts will remain large. Strong
growth in tourism receipts, in line with the rapid expansion in
international visitor arrivals, will be offset by rising imports of
trade-related services. The continued expansion in operations of
foreign-invested enterprises ensures that repatriation of foreign
investors' income and profits will push up the income deficit. Current
transfers inflows will be strong, in line with the government's efforts to
facilitate growth in remittances from overseas Vietnamese. Such inflows,
however, will be insufficient to prevent the current-account deficit from
widening to 5% of GDP in 2007.
