        WORD COUNT:  647

        TEXT:
/LP, /TX  ATA  Airlines  reported a deep $25.7 million second-quarter net loss and at
the same time warned of a dwindling cash balance that may cause the airline
to default on some obligations early next year.

/TX  As  a  result,  ATA's  plan  to  start transatlantic service in 2005 may be
delayed, as will some aircraft deliveries if it is unable to win financing.
The  net  loss  and  $10.5 million operating loss compare with profits last
year.  Revenue  was flat at $390.8 million and unit revenues increased 1.8%
to  7.36  cents.  Scheduled  service  revenues grew 8.2% to $300.8 million,
while charter revenues plummeted 23.1% to $72.7 million.
Scheduled service unit revenues reflected weakness in both load factors and
unit revenue, while yields were virtually unchanged from 2003 levels in the
second  quarter  and  first six months of 2004. The military and government
charter  operations  fell  larger  due  to  the deactivation of CRAF in the
second quarter of 2003. While revenues remained weak, expenses jumped 20.8%
        to $401.3 million.

Unit costs increased 22.1% to 7.56 cents but were still among the lowest in
the industry. The higher expenses were partly due to a 28% increase in fuel
costs.  The  airline  over  the  past  six  months has been hit with higher
maintenance  costs  because  of  a  contractual rate increase in the hourly
engine maintenance deal for Boeing 757-200s.

The  loss  was  no  surprise  because  the  carrier in July warned it would
implement  another round of cost cuts this year as high fuel costs and weak
revenues  take  their  toll; ATA predicted a full-year loss in June (DAILY,
June  16).  What  was  not clear until yesterday, however, was how the weak
revenues  and high fuel costs have caused a serious liquidity crisis at the
        airline.

The  airline ended the quarter with $150 million in cash on hand as of June
30,  down  from  $186  million, but the airline said it has enough money to
meet  its  obligations  this  year. ATA warned, however, that its liquidity
will  fall  further  early  next year due to several obligations, including
some lease payments, due shortly after Jan. 1.    (. . .)

yearend.  The  airline also has talked about starting transatlantic flights
next  year,  more  specifically Chicago-Cologne/Bonn service in May (DAILY,
        July 12). -SL
