      Edison Co.  has filed a multimillion-dollar complaint 
      against a company that  installed reactor coolant pumps at 
      the San Onofre nuclear power  plant. 
     
  /TX           Combustion Engineering Inc. supplied "incorrect and 
      erroneous information" needed to test the coolant pumps, 
      claims  Edison, the plant operator. The pumps were damaged 
      during hydrostatic  tests around June 22, 1993. 
             Edison's attorneys filed the claim Friday in the 
      state  Superior Court in Vista. Combustion Engineering 
      officials, based in  Windsor, Conn., could not be reached 
      Monday afternoon. 
             The repairs cost "several million dollars," Edison 
      spokesman  Steve Hanson said. The damage occurred during a 
      routine refueling  outage, and the repairs  did  not 
      increase  the length of the  outage. Each reactor 
      usually takes about two months to refuel. 
             "At no time was there any danger of a radioactive 
      leak,"  Hanson said.  Combustion   Engineering   officials 
      were   notified  and denied any responsibility. 
             The damaged parts were the "seal cooling heat 
      exchangers,"  the complaint states. Plant operators are 
      required to test the  devices every 10 years, so it 
      probably was the first time they had  been tested since the 
      plant went on line in the early 1980s. 
             The devices are designed to keep the pumps cool 
      while the  reactor is operating, Hanson explained. 
             Combustion Engineering  also makes the fuel rods 
      used at San Onofre and was a primary  contractor for the 
      plant's construction. 
             The damage occurred in Unit 2, one of the two 
      reactors  operating at San Onofre. 
              San Diego Gas & Electric Co. owns 20 percent of the 
      plant,  which generates electricity used throughout 
      Southern California.
