	`mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2, genetic testing may be more straightforward`
	`than in the general human population. The best-studied case is the`
	`Ashkenazi Jewish population. A recent study at Baylor College of Medicine`
	`(Houston, Texas)1 (1. Roa BR, et al. Nature Genetics. 1996;14:185-190.)`
	`showed that, among a large population (approximately 3,000 individuals)`
	`of Ashkenazi origin, 1.09% carried the BRCA1 185delAG mutation and 1.52%`

	`mutations. These two mutations are by far the most frequent mutation`
	`alleles predisposing to heritable breast cancer among the Ashkenazi`
	`population. The study found that the BRCA1 185delAG mutation accounts for`
	`approximately 19% of breast cancer cases diagnosed before age 50 in`
	`Ashkenazi women; this figure agrees with results of two other studies`
	`(16% and 20%, respectively).`

	`population has prompted another company (in addition to OncorMed and`
	`Myriad) to offer tests for that particular mutation to Ashkenazi women`
	`from high-risk families. In April 1996, Genetics and IVF Institute`
	`(Fairfax, Virginia) announced the availability of such a test. (Since`
