    mechanization difficult; a disparity in rural and 
    urban incomes; and an aging of the rural population. 
     
    Farming of rice in Taiwan is characterized by a very 
    large number of small scale farms and there would be 
    very few farming families without a non-farm income

    Despite these structural difficulties Taiwan remains 
    in a situation of oversupply of rice.  Average yields 
    per hectare based on double cropping average 
    5,635 kg. This compares to a figure of 6,718 kg for 
    the United States. Were Taiwan to adopt a single 
    cropping system, the yield per hectare would rise. 
    Per hectare yields in Taiwan are comparabel to those 
    of the United States if the first crop only is 
    considered. 1 defined as families which have no 
    other income source.
