    TEXT:
/LP, /TX  Space exploration has always been a part of Joe Kaczmarek's life. He hasn't
been to the moon or Mars , but the 21-year-old Boca Raton man was born on
July 20, 1975, six years to the day after the first moon landing. Today,
Kaczmarek is a member of the Palm Beach County chapter of the National
    Space Society.

"I've been interested in space since day zero," he said.

/TX     At the South Florida Science Museum Sunday, Kaczmarek and about 2,000
other people explored the wonders of Mars , watching "Live From Mars " on
NASA  television, attending the planetarium show "The Red Planet" and
checking out the museum's other exhibits.

It exceeds our wildest expectations," said Gary Bogner, the museum's
    director of astronomy.

In fact, a few hundred people had to be turned away from the West Palm
    Beach facility.

"Live From Mars " was a satellite program that introduced and explained
the latest photographs from Mars  and showed people from around the
country asking scientists questions about the project.
                                 (...)

"There's a lot of public attention to this," said Mark Penntila of Lake
Worth, adding that the growth of communication on the Internet enables
people of all ages and educational levels to watch as the mysteries of
    space are revealed.

Caitlin Carnes, 5, of Boynton Beach, watched intently and occasionally
lent a hand as her father, Jim, helped her assemble a lander.

Susan Carnes watched with a smile as they worked together. Like many
people at the museum Sunday, she's excited about the mission to Mars .

"I think it's incredible," Carnes said. "The sharpness of the pictures
    was amazing."

McGee said that the National Aeronautics Space Administration's
Discovery program, which spends less on each mission but sends out more of
them, should keep people interested in space.

               (. . .)

"I'd like to drive a car on Mars ," Shannon said. )
CAPTIONS:  Photos by Vincent F. Safuto  ;  Megan Behringer, 10, of
Wellington, assembles her `Mars  lander' at the National Space Society's
exhibit at the South Florida Science Museum on Sunday afternoon. Megan's
lander was dropped from the ceiling a few minutes later, but the egg it was
supposed to protect did not survive. Michael McGee, right, president of the
Palm Beach County chapter of the National Space Society, shows Don Paxson,
of Jupiter, where the Mars  Pathfinder landed.
