File Description [top]

The Post-Tribune extends DIALOG coverage of Indiana, especially Northwest Indiana. It maintains two local bureaus, one in Valparaiso, Porter County, and the other in Crown Point, Lake County, and a national bureau in Washington, DC. Consequently, the paper offers in- depth coverage of state, regional, and local politics and government, as well as the local response to national issues. Post-Tribune Reporters in Indianapolis cover the state legislature when it is in session, and searchers can BEGIN PAPERSIN to search File 536 with (Fort Wayne) The News-Sentinel (DIALOG File 489) for state news. The Post-Tribune is also an excellent source of information on the steel industry and labor news, including coverage of companies such as Bethlehem Steel, USX Corp., USS Gary Works, and news about the United Steel Workers Union

    TEXT:
/LP, /TX  It wasn't little green men landing on Earth, so it probably won't excite
the sci-fi crowd. But the announcement by NASA scientists that they think
they've found signs there was life on Mars - at least millenniums ago - may
turn out to be a scientific milestone.

"Skeptical fascination" is the way NASA describes its mood over the
discovery. That seems to be everyone's reaction, with good reason.
/TX     Skeptical because the only sure conclusion about the baseball-sized
meteorite being  studied was that it did come from Mars. It is the
cumulative effect of evidence, gleaned through the most sophisticated of
technology, that has convinced NASA scientists they have found
"circumstantial evidence" of ancient life on Mars.

Fascination because it's something most people want to believe, even if
secretly.  Few people can resist fanticizing about other worlds as they
stare into a clear sky that gives them a glimpse of the massive universe
    beyond.

It may be years before more is known about whether there are life forms
elsewhere in the universe, but the NASA scientists have done one thing for
sure: unleashed a tantalizing debate topic, particuliarly  in the
    scientific and theological realms.

That could be a big bang.
