/AB  ABSTRACT:  Not long ago, yesterday's carnage in consumer nondurable stocks
would have brought the bottom fishers out, in force. But after Procter &
Gamble said its fiscal third-quarter growth rate would fall well below Wall
Street expectations, investors marked down its shares by 31%, slicing an
astounding $35.51 billion off its market value. And other consumer plays
fell hard, too: Colgate-Palmolive was down 11%; Clorox down 10%; Gillette
down 6.9%; and Kimberly-Clark down 11%. All now labor at or near 52-week
lows. So, there it is. Encapsulated in a single day's trading is the
investor rationale behind the continued split in valuations between
so-called Old Economy and New Economy stocks. It isn't just mindless
chasing of technology stocks causing the chasm between the two to widen.
There are, in fact, some fundamental reasons portfolio managers continue to
abandon the brand-name stocks that, not long ago, were Wall Street
favorites. Among them: Growth rates for consumer companies have slowed to a
crawl only barely above the level of the economy. Take P&G. Its earnings
were, before yesterday's news, expected to grow this year at a rate of
about 8%. Yet its multiple yesterday, even after hitting a 52-week low of
$60.125 -- down $27.3125 at 4 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite
trading -- was still nearly 34 times this year's earnings. Ditto for
Gillette, which hit a 52-week low of $32.4375, but is still trading at a
multiple of nearly 31 times this year's earnings. Then there is Clorox,
which fell to $36.125, and within hailing distance of its low for the year.
It is still trading at a multiple of nearly 36 times earnings estimates for
    this year.
