File Description [top]

The Hospital Inpatient Profiles (HIP) database provides a quick and comprehensive overview of hospital-based activity for more than 7,100 procedures and diagnoses. Patient utilization information can be accessed by keyword or International Classification of Diseases (ICD) code. Use HIP to locate data such as the types of procedures performed on cancer patients, the diagnoses associated with patients undergoing spinal fusion, the number of bypass patients (and the average number of bypasses per patient), and hospital mortality.

The database updates annually with the latest data available from the National Hospital Discharge Survey. Statistics are generally from two years prior to the current year.

Tips [top]

USE FILE 462

to find diagnosis and epidemiology information for market research, product development, and strategic planning.

SEARCH /TI

to search for keywords in the Title, e.g.,

     SELECT DIABETIC(W)NEUROPATHY/TI

SEARCH /DE

to search controlled-vocabulary terms, e.g.,

     SELECT DIABETES(W)MELLITUS/DE

Subject Coverage [top]

Each procedure code provides the number of procedures/discharges for a given year (principal and all listed), the average length of stay, the top six concomitant procedures, the top six concomitant diagnoses, age and gender breakouts, discharge status, and payment source. Each diagnosis code provides the total number of diagnoses for a given year (principal and all listed), the average length of stay, the top six concomitant diagnoses, the top six concomitant procedures, age and gender breakouts, discharge status, and payment source.

Patients who go to a hospital can get up to 7 diagnoses or diseases listed on their chart. The very first disease is the primary diagnosis, or the reason they came to the hospital. The rest are concomittant or associated diseases.

Sources [top]

Data included in HIP is derived from the National Hospital Discharge Survey (NHDS), a national probability survey conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). The NCHS is a part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
