File Description [top]

The Emergency Room (ER) database provides disease-specific emergency department data for more than 2,600 diseases. Patient utilization information can be accessed by keyword or International Classification of Diseases (ICD) code.

Emergency Room database updates annually with the latest data available from the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS). Statistics are generally from two years prior to the current year.

Tips [top]

USE FILE 454

to find diagnosis and epidemiology information for market research, product development, and strategic planning.

SEARCH /TI

to search for keywords in the Title, e.g.,

     SELECT RESPIRATORY(3N)DISEASE?/TI

SEARCH /DE

to search controlled-vocabulary terms, e.g.,

     SELECT DIABETES(W)MELLITUS/DE

Subject Coverage [top]

Each ICD code includes discharge data (number of primary and all listed discharges for a given year), patient characteristics/payment source (gender/age/race breakouts, expected source of payment, and HMO participation), visit characteristics (mode of arrival, day of visit, urgency to see patient, actual waiting time to see physician, level of pain, place of injury), type of provider seen (percentage of patients seeing registered nurses, staff physicians, etc.), medications provided (drug usage by order and volume), diagnostic/screening services provided (frequency and type of tests performed), procedures provided (frequency and type of procedures performed), and disposition (where patient went after ER release).

Sources [top]

Data included in the Emergency Room database is derived from the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS), a national probability survey conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). The NCHS is a part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
