File Description [top]

Art Abstracts is a bibliographic database that cites articles from more than 300 periodicals published throughout the world. Coverage includes periodicals, yearbooks, and museum bulletins published in English and other languages. In addition to articles, reproductions of works of art that appear in cited periodicals are indexed. For example, if a painting appears in an advertisement, Art Index provides the artist’s name, the title of the work, and a full bibliographic citation.

Art Abstracts offers well-written, detailed abstracts that describe the content and scope of the source articles in approximately 70% of records since abstracting began in 1994.

/AB  ABSTRACT:  Two "post-Impressionist" exhibitions in 1910 and 1912, organized
by the art critic Roger Fry, introduced a profound breach in the language
of art in England.  The first, "Manet and the Post-Impressionists,"
focussed on works by artists relatively unknown on the other side of the
channel:  Cezanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin and their successors including the
fauvists.  It received a hostile reception not only from academics but also
from the proponents of impressionism  as the only possible alternative to
academism since the new movement was depicted as a reaction against
impressionism .  The critical language Fry would gradually elaborate to
anchor modern painting in tradition transformed public perception of it.
The critical theoretization of "Post-Impressionism " became a source of
inspiration to a younger generation of English artists at a time when
London began to be receptive to contemporary French and Italian art. Fry
wanted to show that English painting could be integrated into the European
tradition.  At the end of 1912, he organized a second "Post-Impressionist
Exhibition", in which as well as works by Matisse, Picasso and their
contemporaries, he also exhibited what he considered to be representative
of the English "Post-Impressionist movement".  Reprinted by permission of
    the publisher.
