File Description [top]

DIALOG KnowledgeBase is a reference file that provides answers to many frequently asked questions about Dialog's family of products and services. Produced by all three Dialog Knowledge Centers in Cary, London, and Sydney, KnowledgeBase draws from the extensive expertise of Product, Technical, and Subject Specialists from around the globe. The file is updated biweekly and is regularly monitored for errors and out-of-date information.

KnowledgeBase complements other value-added files on DIALOG such as DialIndex (411), DIALOG Bluesheets (415), and the DIALOG Finder Files including Product Name (413), Journal Name (414), and Company Name (416). Search KnowledgeBase for easy access to product and file information, search tips, and training materials.

KnowledgeBase entries originate from a wide variety of sources including product and file documentation, training materials, information providers, and Dialog staff. Many are original entries written by Knowledge Center staff, Product Managers, or Content Specialists in response to customer inquiries. The file is designed to help users quickly find answers to such questions as:

  • How can I locate a list of the top pharmaceutical drugs?
  • How can I find a list of patent country and kind codes?
  • How does Dialog's ERA redistribution/archive feature work?
  • How can I convert tabular output data to Microsoft Excel format?
  • How can I get a list of journals indexed in a file?

KnowledgeBase is also searchable using a specially developed custom search form available on Dialog's corporate Web site at http://support.dialog.com/.

  /DE  Dialog

/LP  Truncated  searches  which  exceed Dialog system capacities will generate a
    PROCESSING STOPPED error message.

/TX  When truncating, a set is created from retrieval up to and
including the specified term. The PROCESSING STOPPED message warns that
results are incomplete. The following is an example of a search that
resulted in a PROCESSING STOPPED error message:
         ? S ALK?
           >>>Processing for ALK? stopped after ALKOXYSOLANE

To continue processing, enter a SELECT statement that will resume
processing at the point where the processing stopped and continue
processing through the end of the index. The following SELECT statement
is an example of how to continue processing when limits occur:
         ? S ALKOXYSOLANE:ALK9999

To complete the search, be sure to combine the results of each set
    using OR.
         ? S S1 OR S2

The truncation maximum is 2,000 terms when using a colon to define a
    range.

In the TRADEMARKSCAN (R) databases, PROCESSING STOPPED error messages
may be encountered when searching short or common character strings in
the Rotated Trademark Index (TR=).  The  following example shows a
PROCESSING STOPPED error message in the Rotated Trademark Index:
         ? S TR=MI?
           >>>File 226 processing for TR=MI? stopped at TR=MITHCOT@

The following SELECT statement is an example of how to continue
processing when limits occur while searching in the Rotated Trademark

Pre-explodes  are  large categories of narrower terms (usually 100 or more)
that  are  used  together  in  searches.  These  large categories have been
pre-exploded  to  speed  up  the  processing.  In the MeSH thesaurus, these
categories  have  a  large black dot in front of the descriptor. These same
categories have been pre-exploded on Dialog. Pre-exploded categories can be
searched  with an exclamation mark (S NEOPLASMS!), but processing is faster
if the descriptor code is used with only an ending period (S DC=C4.).
