    TEXT:
/LP,TX  The scheduled opening of more than 2 million square feet of retail space
along the Strip by 2001 has left some observers questioning whether
developers are adding too many stores to the Las Vegas retail market.

But a collection of executives from some of the country's largest
retail-mall developers told an audience Wednesday at the MGM Grand that Las
Vegas has the ability to absorb the additions.

/TX  "Las Vegas has not yet begun to hit its maximum," said John Ragland, vice
president and director of research for The Rouse Co., which owns the
Fashion Show Mall. "We're all walking around almost in awe. We all know
there will be some limits to growth here."

The sign that too much retail space has been opened, Ragland noted is
"when one of us gets hit by some 2-by-4 over the head with a failed
    project."

Ragland delivered his comments during a lunchtime panel discussion during
the second day of a three-day conference sponsored by CIBC Oppenheimer Inc.

An estimated 150 investors and bankers gathered for the event, which ends
today, to discuss trends in the Las Vegas gaming, lodging and retail
    markets.

Plans have been announced for a 450,000-square-foot mall at the new
Aladdin; 500,000 square feet of shopping space at The Venetian; a
1-million-square-foot addition to the Fashion Show Mall; 80,000 square feet
of shopping at Bellagio; and a 240,000-square-foot addition to the recently
expanded The Forum Shops at Caesars.
