    TEXT:
/LP,/TX  Amid the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the USS Constitution's
first sail, tribute will be paid aboard the Argentine tall ship Libertad to
a son of County Mayo who journeyed to Boston and then became a high seas
    warrior.

Admiral William Brown remains a virtual unknown in the United States
and Ireland, but in Argentina he is the nautical equivalent of George
Washington - founder of the country's navy.

/TX      "He's just another example of the far-reaching effects of Irish
emigrants, but his influence stretched far beyond America to South
America," said Marian Trench, director for the Foxford Admiral Brown
Society's project to create a museum and visitors' center in Brown's
    hometown of Foxford.

Tomorrow night the ship - one of 18 tall ships that will salute "Old
Ironsides" in Boston Harbor on Thursday - will host "An Irish Evening"
including Irish and Argentine officials, Boston-area business leaders and
    academics.

At some time this week, the society will present a bronze bust of Brown
to Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino.

A scrappy strategist who helped Argentina escape the rule of Spain and
the threat of neighboring Brazil, Brown's statue stands in Buenos Aires.

His house has been preserved as a museum and streets throughout the
    country bear his name.

To the sailors aboard the Libertad, docked at Constitution Wharf,
Brown's legacy carries on as Argentina's aspiring naval officers set out on
the tall ship each year to become sailors and students of the sea.
"He is a hero to us," said Javier Armando Valladares, second-in-command
    of the Libertad.

"He came to Argentina to find a safe place to live but found himself
fighting to help our country win its freedom," he said.

Born in 1777, Brown arrived in Boston at age 9 with his father, Trench
    said.

But his father succumbed to yellow fever, leaving Brown to fend for
himself as a cabin boy on commercial ships.

By 1809, Brown and his wife were in Argentina, where the Spanish
stymied his efforts to capitalize on coastal trading.
