    TEXT:
  /TX, /LP    Mismi, a point-in-time crossing network expected to launch by year-end,
plans to provide users with more effective technology to execute
portfolio-wide trades. Though the concept is decades old, Mismi management
sees it as ripe for revival amid growing concerns about information leakage
    at continuous dark books.
Funded by Philadelphia-based TL Ventures and Saturn Partners in Boston,
Mismi aims to bridge the gap between a portfolio manager's strategy to
optimize returns and the trader's goal to optimize executions. Its CEO,
Andrew Papandreadis, is a crossing technology veteran-he developed
Instinet's JapanCrossing in 2000 and helped build a point-in-time cross for
    Burlington Capital Markets in 2003.
The first crosses were initiated in the late 1980s by Investment
Technology Group (ITG) and Instinet, and their point-in-time, call-auction
structures were determined as much by the state of technology-often
employing fax machines to deliver orders and trade confirmations-as
effectiveness. Continuous crosses have gained popularity over the last
decade, particularly in recent years, with the emergence of 40-odd venues
that do not display bids and offers.
    ( . . .)
Heckman declined to separate Posit Match's average volume from Posit
Now's. The second-quarter average daily volume for the entire Posit
crossing suite, including Posit Alert, was 45 million shares, he said, down
from 55 million in the previous quarter. Overall, ITG executed 180 million
shares daily in the U.S. in August.
"One of the initial theories behind Posit Match was that we would match
portfolios based on styles and indexes," said Heckman. The cross has the
ability to match portfolios but does so rarely, he said-"You need a sort of
    perfect storm to match portfolios."
