/LP,/TX  Here's a look at the hour's top business stories:

Stocks closed mixed, as cyclical blue-chips rallied toward the closing

stronger-than-expected report from the National Association of
Purchasing Management revived fears of higher interest rates early in
the session. The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 36 1/2 points

/TX  Declines led advances by 15-14. Trading volume was light, with 681
million shares changing hands on the New York Stock Exchange.
The New York Stock Exchange composite index closed down nearly a point

PETsMART says its board of directors has approved the repurchase of up
$25 million of the company's common stock. PETsMART President and CEO
Philip Francis says the comnpany believes its stock is undervalued,
based on curent market prices. PETsMART is an operator of superstores
specializing in pet food, supplies and services. It operates 473 stores
    in North America.

American Home Products warns it expects second-quarter and 1999 fiscal
year earnings per share to be 7 to 11 cents below most forecasts. Most
economists have forecast earnings per share of 41 cents and $1.89
respectively for the periods. The company blames weakness in the
agricultural products business and the livestock segment of its animal
    health business.

It says the shortfall in the North American agricultural products
business is primarily due to reduced demand for grain in international
markets and reduced U.S. livestock grain consumption. It adds record
harvests over the last two years in the Americas played a key role.

     TEXT:
/LP,/TX   BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, May 9 (UPI)  President Clinton, in
his brief summit Saturday with Caribbean leaders, plans to cover
a wide range of economic and political issues with the region.
/TX     In addition to the headline issues, covering the banana
industry and efforts to update the Caribbean Basin Initiative
trade partnership, Clinton faces such matters as U.S. policy
toward Cuba and cooperation on law enforcement.
Caribbean nations have been debating the Shiprider Agreement,
which would give the United States the right to police Caribbean
territorial waters for drug smugglers, and have criticized the
Helms-Burton law that imposes U.S. penalties against foreign
     companies doing business with Cuba.
While sharing European frustration with Helms-Burton, White
House press secretary Mike McCurry said, ''They have lived for a
long time with U.S.policy toward Cuba, and have figured out ways
to accommodate that within the OAS (Organization of American
     States) and other organizations.''
The range of pending law enforcement issues include efforts to
fight drugs, alien smuggling, corruption and gun-running.
Clinton also was likely to raise with Prime Minister James
Mitchell of St. Vincent and the Grenadines the case of
James and Penny Fletcher, a West Virginia couple reportedly
held in squalid jail conditions for the past seven months
charged with killing a taxi driver.
