| /AB | Virtualized internal data centers, or 'private clouds,' provide a way for |
| companies to derive the benefits of cloud computing services without taking | |
| on its risks. For example, the Department of Veterans Affairs uses Egenera's | |
| PAN Manager cloud management software to handle the I/O, networking, and | |
| storage needs of a small internal cloud built on six standard Dell blade | |
| servers. Private clouds mimic the format of such public clouds as Amazon's | |
| Elastic Compute Cloud. Microsoft's Bob Muglia, president of the server and | |
| tools division, expects to see businesses move toward a mixture of public | |
| and private clouds, known as hybrid clouds. The hardest part, he says, will | |
| involve moving the services attached to a particular workload from private | |
| to public. Microsoft plans to build its Windows Azure cloud operating system | |
| into Windows Server to facilitate that process. Teradata CTO Stephen Brobst | |
| warns of privacy and governance concerns associated with running data | |
| warehouses in public clouds. Teradata client e-Bay, for example, runs an | |
| internal 40-TB data warehouse on a grid of x86 servers. VMware's vCenter | |
| Lab Manager, Citrix Systems' Lab Manager, and Surgient's Virtual Automation | |
| Platform address the additional issue of the need for self-service portals. | |
| (. . .) | |
| Internal clouds may also stimulate end user creativity, as workers devise ways | |
| to merge services and develop innovative applications, resulting in increased | |
| productivity and revenue. | |
