New Ethics Guidelines Issued in Israel Isaac Setton describes the
requirements of a joint covenant covering the relationship between the
Israeli pharmaceutical industry and the medical profession. Isaac Setton
is corporate regulatory affairs advisor, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries,
        Petah Tiqva, Israel.

/TX  In October 2004, the Israeli Medical Association (IMA) and representative
organisations of pharmaceutical manufacturers and importers operating in
Israel, issued a joint covenant of ethics governing relationships between
the pharmaceutical industry and the medical profession. The covenant was
endorsed by the major health services and sick funds.

The motivation behind the covenant was the desire of all parties to command
public trust with respect to activities in which they are involved. The two
components of the covenant are the Code of Ethics of Marketing of
pharmaceutical companies operating in Israel and the Code of Ethics of the
Israeli Medical Association with regard to contact between physicians and
        commercial companies.

        Pharmaceutical industry code

The new Code of Ethics of Marketing of pharmaceutical companies operating
in Israel is based on the International Federation of Pharmaceutical
Manufacturers and Associations (IFPMA) Code of Pharmaceutical Marketing
Practices, which was originally adopted in 1981 and underwent a major
overhaul in 1994. In order to address the particular conditions prevailing
in Israel, the IFPMA code has been adapted to include specific requirements
and additional rules. Every pharmaceutical company operating in Israel that
adopts the code will be entitled to use a special 'Emblem of Ethics' on its
documentation and as a lapel pin for its employees.
