| /AB | ABSTRACT: Christopher Wren's Temple Bar has come back to London after over |
| 120 years of exile in Hertfordshire. For 200 years until 1878, Temple Bar | |
| was situated where Fleet Street met the Strand and was originally | |
| constructed at the behest of Charles II and finished in 1672. By the | |
| 1870s, however, horse traffic had increased in the Strand and Fleet | |
| Street, and the Bar formed a bottleneck and an obstacle to the rebuilding | |
| of the adjacent Law Courts. The Bar was demolished in 1878, but the stones | |
| were later bought by Sir Henry Meux who rebuilt it to impress guests at his | |
| house and estate at Theobalds, in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. In 2001, | |
| however, a new site opportunity arose in the shape of Paternoster Square, | |
| beside St Paul's, and this presented a perfect site; the City Corporation | |
| recognised the opportunity offered by the new square to re-site the Bar and | |
| promised to pay the bill of around L 4 million. | |
