General Science Abstracts cites articles of at least one column in length from more than 150 English-language periodicals published in the United States and Great Britain. Abstracts of 50 to 150 words, describing the content and scope of the item are available for articles since March 1993. Periodical coverage includes popular science magazines as well as professional journals, and The New York Times Science Times section (published weekly on Tuesday). The database is useful for both the nonspecialist and the expert. Types of materials covered include feature articles, biographical sketches, reports of symposia and conferences, review articles, selected letters to the editor, obituaries, and book reviews.

/AB	`ABSTRACT: The NIH is considering a petition to curb the spiraling domestic`
	`costs of an important AIDS drug. The 1980 Bayh-Dole Act specifies that`
	`government-funded inventions should be available to the public on`
	`reasonable terms and gives federal funding agencies the right to force a`
	`patent holder to license its inventions to other companies. In January,`
	`Essential Inventions, a Washington, D.C.-based advocacy group, asked the`
	`NIH to exercise this right in relation to 4 patents held by Abbott`
	`Laboratories of Chicago, Illinois. Essential Inventions claimed that Abbott`
	`was profiteering on a widely used AIDS drug called Norvir, prices for which`
	`increased by up to 400 percent last year. Opponents claim that granting the`
	`petition would damage efforts to commercialize academic discoveries.`
