File Description [top]

Manual, Alternative and Natural TherapyTM (MANTISTM) is a bibliographic database that provides coverage for health care disciplines not significantly represented in the major biomedical databases. International in coverage, the database contains references from more than 1,200 journals, with preference given to peer-reviewed journals.

Approximately 70% of the references have abstracts. Searchable subject headings include Medical Subject Headings (MeSH®), plus a specialized supplemental controlled vocabulary in the areas of alternative medicine.

  /TI   Mysteries of Rhubarb: Chinese Medicinal Rhubarb Through the
     Ages
  AU=   FOUST, C.
  JN=,PY=,PD=   HERBALGRAM. March 1996 (19960300), Vol (36), pp 25-31

  /AB    Rhubarb presents an interesting example of the historical
      difficulty developing pharmacopeial monographs to establish
      identity, quality, and purity of this classic laxative herb.
      For nearly two thousand years rhubarb both fascinated and
      confounded professionals in the fields of medicine,
      pharmacology, botany, and horticulture. Not only were
      rhubarb's precise  origins uncertain, but the active
      constituents accountable for the root's gentle cathartic
      action and astringency were unknown.
      Rhubarb's mysteries unveiled themselves slowly. After much
      experimentation in Europe with the
      propagation of rhubarb, researchers learned that the
      medicinal root came from
      several varieties or species of rhubarb, not from one single
      species. By the end of the nineteenth century, it became
      clear that the  particular medicinal characteristics of
      rhubarb were due in part to conditions under which the
      Chinese roots grew, such as soil composition and climate,
      which could not be replicated in Europe. In addition,
      standardization of dosage  and its accurate
      measurement have proven to be difficult, as the root seems
      to work differently for each individual. The development of
      a pharmacopeial monograph  for rhubarb is still a
      problem today.
