/AB, /XT   ABSTRACT: Israel's economy has performed impressively since a
comprehensive economic reform and financial liberalization
program was undertaken by the country in 1985.  The country
remains attractive to foreign investments and several
multinationals such as Intel Corp., IBM, Siemens AG, Accor and
Cable and Wireless have set up operations in the country.  At
present, Israel is focusing on transport infrastructure programs
         and improving its tourist industry.

         TEXT:
/LP, /XT, /TX   Although recent political events have been less than encouraging,
most economists predict a successful future for Israel if the
peace process can be put back on the rails.  the story was very
different 10 years ago before the introduction of an ambitious
programme of economic reform and financial liberalisation began
to pay dividends.  Andrew Album looks at the achievements and some
of the shortcomings of a country to which regional peace could
mean the biggest boost yet to the economy.

/TX   Only a decade ago, Israel was on the brink of economic bankruptcy.
For almost ten years, successive governments had been running
unsustainable budget deficits as they spent money with
almost reckless abandon.  Inflation rocketed to 400% per annum,
the balance of payments situation deteriorated and foreign
         reserves began to dry up.
        (...)
Finally, perhaps the biggest bonus of all would be the opening
of Israel to vast numbers of Muslim pilgrims from across the
         Arab world and beyond.
