  /AB   GRANT  DESCRIPTION:  The  foundation makes grants in the areas of the arts 
        and   humanities,  community  health,  education,  environment,  social 
        services,  programs  for  children and youth, and urban affairs. Grants 
        are  awarded  to  support  general  operations, programs/projects, seed 
        money,  technical  assistance,  and  program-related investments/loans. 
        Preference  will  be  given  to applicants that present problem-solving 
        projects,   develop  organizational  capacity,  or  request  short-term 
        technical assistance. Applicants are encouraged to submit brief two- or 
        three-page  letters  of  intent  outlining  the  proposed projects, the 
        issues  or  problems  to be addressed, and the applicant organizations' 
        purpose  and  programs.  The  foundation conducts periodic how to apply 
        workshops  in  the San Francisco office and locally throughout the five 
        eligible  counties.  Contact  the  office  or  visit  the  Web site for

        Alameda,  Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, and San Mateo Counties of

        endowments,  medical  research,  scholarships,  or direct assistance to 
        individuals.
