File Description [top]

MIRA: Motor Industry Research provides extensive coverage of business and technical developments in the global automotive industry. Broadly corresponding to the two electronic publications "Automobile Abstracts" (AA) and "Automotive Business News" (ABN), the database provides comprehensive bibliographic information, and in the majority of cases, an English language abstract. The database includes news items, features articles and reports on all activities directly related to automobile manufacture and development.

While generally concerning itself with developments in the mainstream automotive industry, MIRA also provides wide coverage of allied fields, notably production materials, fuels and lubricants, and the tire industry.

/AB  A phenomenological multizone combustion model is developed for use in the
transient condition analysis of a turbocharged direct injection (DI) diesel
engine. The main processes in the cylinder, such as spray penetration,
droplet evaporation, air-fuel mixing, spray wall interaction, ignition and
fuel combustion, are taken into consideration. In order to predict cylinder
pressure and NOx emission in a wide range of engine speeds, loads and
air-fuel rations under transient conditions, the model has been improved in
many respects, especially in the velocity distribution of fuel spray, zonal
entrainment and the calculation of gas properties and chemical equilibrium
compositions of combustion products including solid carbon. With respect to
the turbocharged engine with a high pressure in the cylinder, the
compression factor is added to the ideal gas equation of state in order to
simulate cylinder pressure accurately. Cylinder pressure, heat release and
NOx emission histories for different operating conditions are calculated
for two types of engines. The agreement between calculated and measured
results is good for wide range of operating conditions. This indicates that
the model has the ability to predict cylinder pressures and NOx emissions
in both steady state and transient operating conditions. (Auth)

/AB  Renault has revealed information on its next-generation Megane range, which
will comprise six variants, including an all- new SUV. Other variants will
be a pickup, cabriolet, three- and five- door hatchback, four door saloon,
station-wagon and compact minivan. The variants will all be based on a new
platform, the X84. The SUV model will replace the current RX4 based on the
Scenic minivan. Chief designer Patrick Le Quement says the new range will
be bigger all round and full of novel design details, and will be Renault's
'strongest design statement' since the Twingo. The cabriolet version will
have a retractable steel roof and the three- door model will be more a
traditional hatchback than a coupe. The five-door Megane will be launched
at the September 2002 Paris motor show.(JN)
