/AB  Fundamental restructuring is under way at Michell Australia, the largest
global buyer, processor and exporter of Australian wool. The company is
evolving into a specialist fibre business targeting selected markets and
working with retailers and designers to ensure consistent supply of new
fibre products. Several misconceptions about the company's recent
activities are dismissed, though combing has been reduced and carbonising
output cut back through an inadequate supply of carding wools. Increased
blending of wool is a major trend and its implications are discussed. A
joint venture agreement has been signed with The Woolmark Company for
Michell to supply Optim processed fibre to global textile markets. Optim is
being marketed as an entirely new high-value fibre, and will feature in
knitwear ranges available for the winter 2003/04 season in the northern
hemisphere. Pricing is pitched between superfine wool and cashmere, and
processing stages are described. Full technical support from both companies
is available. More new value-add products from Michell are planned and the
vast scope of activities is noted.
