File Description [top]

Published by the nonprofit Foundation Center, the Foundation Grants Index contains descriptions of grants that have been awarded to nonprofit organizations by U.S. independent, operating, company-sponsored, and community foundations as well as by corporate giving programs and grantmaking public charities.

This file compiles grant records found in the Foundation Center's online publication the Foundation Directory Online Professional, adding an average of 10,000 new grants per month. Designed primarily to serve grantseeking nonprofits in determining grantmakers' funding interests, it also serves grantmakers and researchers as a source of key facts about private philanthropic activity. In-depth information about grantmakers represented in File 27 is available in File 26, Foundation Directory, which includes addresses, year-end financials, and board membership information as well as application guidelines.

Principal sources of information are voluntary reports to the Foundation Center and information obtained from IRS returns filed each year by grantmakers.
