File Description [top]

Published by the nonprofit Foundation Center, the Foundation Directory is a leading source of information on U.S. grantmakers and their grantmaking activities. It provides descriptions of more than 100,000 independent, operating, company-sponsored, and community foundations as well as corporate giving programs and grantmaking public charities. The file includes descriptions of active and terminated grantmakers. In-depth information on specific grants made by these organizations can be found in File 27, Foundation Grants Index.

Records include entries from the following Foundation Center online and print directories: The Foundation Directory, The Foundation Directory Online Professional; Corporate Giving Online; The Foundation Directory; The Foundation Directory, Part 2; Guide to U.S. Foundations: Their Trustees, Officers, and Donors; and National Directory of Corporate Giving.

Principal sources of information are voluntary reports to the Foundation Center and information obtained from IRS returns filed each year by grantmakers.
